What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Right at the beginning we did a questionnaire to find out what people liked in different trailers. This was just a general questionnaire based on every genre and type they had seen. This helped us decide our genre.
After doing that we made a more specific questionnaire so we can get feedback relating to what we wanted to do. From doing this, the audience feedback we got before we made our trailer or anything such as that, we got a feel for what our target audience wanted, what they enjoyed, what they didn't and what they wanted from a horror trailer, inspired us and gave us ideas to what we could create. By having this information it made it easier for us to create what our target audience wanted.
Once we started creating our trailer we showed our teachers just to get their feedback and how we could improve it. This gave us a couple of ideas on how to improve, and make it what the audience wanted.
Then we showed of our friends ( as they are the same as our target audience.) It was mainly all positive but they gave a couple of ideas such as the transactions which join the clips together.
Once we had finished our trailer we showed our target audience and their feedback I have posted, in a different post. It was mainly all positive and gave us a boost that we had made a good trailer, that was effective.
It seemed to be people of the age 16-20 that mainly enjoyed our trailer. This was a positive sign because this was the people that we were aiming to target our trailer at. It shows I have managed to reach my targeted audience.

Audience theory -
The theories that helped us decide what our target audience should be like and who they are:
British social grading scale -
We classified our target audience via the British Social Grading Scale. It helped to show which groups made the most money.

By targeting teenagers and young adults. This was the group which statistically has most disposable income. Most have jobs, paying low wages but still making them make money. At this age they have little rent to pay (if any) and they can spend their money on what they want to, instead of saving it up.  Because of this, this means that they can spend their money on either going to the cinema or buying the DVD.

Lifestyle schematics-
The type of people who we are aiming are trailer at the stereotypical teenager. No stereotypes with teenagers because most like horror films. The reason for teenagers and young adults are they are the people who have the most disposable income and are more likely to be the people who go to cinema or are willing to buy the DVD.

Uses and Gratifications -
Within our trailer we have a bazaar realism and juxtaposition, how the mother has two role - she is a house wide and how this is linked to a horror film. The audience are lulled into a false sense of security and feel they can relate back to it with the family situation. The audience will be getting a horror film with a twist because it starts off as a normal film with a happy family - there is no sign of horror in the beginning section.

With our trailer we have tried to be quite subtle with our horror. The reason for this is so that it can go on TV more, before watershed and in prime time TV. This means we will be able to get a bigger audience as more people will be able to see it. Some people may say there isn't enough horror in it, but our reason for doing so justifies this out.
This isn't a normal convention for horror however I feel it would work.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

For the research and planning side of our production, I used the Internet to find out about other similar products. I used google images and different websites to find out about other magazine front cover and posters for the horror genre. This gave me some ideas for when it came to doing our ancillary tasks. For our main production I youtubed first different genre trailer, however then narrowed it down to the horror genre and youtubed horror trailers to find out what worked, what didn't, what were the forms and conventions and what made the trailer scary. I used the blog to present all of my findings.
I used Microsoft word to create the questionnaire. I did different boxes and lines - which were easiest done on Microsoft word. I also used this to create the table for my progression plan.
To create the graphs for the results of the questionnaire, I used an online website - where all I had to do was input the data found out, then it would create the graphs for me. This was a great help and was easy to use.

For the construction we used two different cameras to film it with, to get different camera angles on the same shot. When it came to doing the lighting in the dark we used a simple but effective way - I have an iPhone and Tyler who was helping us has a htc, we both had torches on there so put them on and moved them about. They worked really well.
Once we had all of our shots we had to put them together. For this we used elements. This was easy to use and had great effects which we could use. We mainly used the fades, to fade clips in and out. This also helped when it came to adding the audio and sound effects. The audio was separate. So we got rid of all of the background noise and the background speech we had, and added in the audio separately.  When it came to doing the sound effects, we got them off of Youtube and added them in the same way - using the audio lines.
When it came to doing the ancillary tasks, we used Photoshop to create both of them. It was simple to do as you have the layer tool, which meant you did have to do it all in the correct order.
As we did all of this we used the blog to help us, and posted our work on here for people and teachers to see.

For the evaluation, it was mainly just the blog I used. I posted my work on here as I did it and also I could look at peoples work from last year and what they did to get ideas to help me answer the questions. Also this shows the dates so I know I have to do about 3 posts a weeks, and if I don't my teacher can see and pull me up on it.

How effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary texts?

How effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary texts?

As a brief description to do with all three projects. The trailer has used different camera shots to keep the audience's attention and focus. The establishing shot is a long shot which within the first couple of seconds, shows the location ad character. The characters and the editing are the actions which mainly drive the narrative through this trailer. The main focus of all three tasks are the woman's character as she turns into a dead person. I have focused on this on all three of our productions as in the trailer, she is the main character, in the magazine she is the person on the front cover and for the poster, it is her legs which are shown to be all muddy. This has kept all three of our tasks uniformed, leading to a pleasing outcome for our audience. The poster was mad dark, eeary and serious to contrast with the brightness of the magazine front cover. All three productions are effective because they give away detail however not too much.

Personally I feel our main production and ancillary texts are effective and link together well. We have tried to combine things in the trailer to the film poster and the film poster to the magazine front cover. We have used the same actor in all three - however in completely different ways. The film poster it isn't clear that it is the same main actor, as it consists of just her feet, however we have composed her to be like this but she is in the same outfit as the trailer, so that the audience recognise that its is the same actress. For our magazine front cover we have used the same actress however in a different outfit. I don't feel we should have done this - I feel we should have kept it the same outfit as in the trailer, but Shannon wanted it to be different to look more casual so we went with that idea. You can still tell that it is the same actress though and links into the trailer because of her, it just would have linked in more because of the outfit as well.

We have kept the film poster and the trailer quite dark to link in with the genre of our texts (horror.) This is also the same for the red writing on the poster. This is not the same for the magazine front cover where it is light and white. If it was to link in it would need to be darker and not have such a white background - which doesn't look great because it draws attention to all of the space left on the front cover. There is some dark places, such as the puffs however that is it. The is a small link done by having white writing on the front of the magazine front cover and having the title and the release date in white on the poster.

Continuing with the theme of colours, there is also some red ( a small amount of blood on the bat), on the film poster, whereas the magazine front cover is mainly red.

On all three texts we have mentioned the name of the main actress (Shannon Carey.) This is a subtle link but if they remember the name on one thing it will help with the other two and emphasis it.

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

This image has been taken from the very beginning of my Trailer, as I have found there generally is always a certification alert whether it be from the British Board of Film Classification or one of the coloured banners, as it signifies the target audience of the film. – In my case I have chosen to use one of the coloured banners. Audio is just as important as visual, and I had found that non-diegetic music tended to kick in before anything was heard diegetically to anchor the genre of the film, I chose to do just this, by introducing the first piece of soundtrack for my trailer straight away, in order to set atmosphere and set the pace of the trailer. Voice overs are also commonly used, however only for a short amount of time to introduce a character. Stereotypically a deep male voice is used to create a sense of tension in the air and atmosphere.

Because thriller trailers use quick paced editing along with various camera angles to keep the viewers of the clip enticed, I too decided this would be something I needed to involve within my trailer as it added fluidity and pieced the trailer together.

With our media products we have tried to follow some forms and conventions however we have also challenged some because they didn't work for what we wanted.

Our trailer follows forms and conventions by not giving away too much information. We have only given away the vital information to make it make sense. Also we have put the credits at the end, and the green screen at the beginning.

Our magazine does this by having the title at the top with the mast head. We have challenged it because we have put the bar code at the top of the page with the price and the issue number. This is normally down the bottom of the magazine, but it didn't work there so we put it at the top so it doesn't stand out too much.

The film poster we have followed, by having the title at the top with the release date. Also we have followed the forms by having all the credits at the bottom of the poster. There isn't a specific place for the release date however, normally its either the top or the bottom. We took this into consideration and found out it looked a lot better at the top of the poster. Also we could link it into the title, so this is the reason for that.

Teaser trailers are often described as being short with only a couple of clips to tell the narrative. We challenged this convention by using lots of different short sharp clips which more on quickly. We didnt want to give to much a way and also for horror this adds a tension to the trailer. However we did keep the length short (1:26) to keep the adience entices and interested. Also by keeping it short it makes them want to see more. We put just enough information in this trailer without giving away everything or too much and giving away the whole story line.

We also challenged forms and conventions because normally the protagonist character is a male and the antagonist is a female. In our trailer we have done it so that both characters are bad in a way becuase the male kills the woman * by accident* and the woman tries to get revenge, so we have done it the other way round slightly.

Within our trailer we have created a juxtaposition with the idea of having a house wife and a happy family in a horror film. However we kept the convention of having violence in horror films and making it spooky with our mirror scene when the mother just appears in the mirror even though you cant see her in shot.

Shown to target audience to see what they think

When Shannon and I, finished our trailer we showed it to our target audience, to see what they thought- the positives and the negatives. The feedback we got was mainly all positive, which was a good sign, meaning our trailer does attract the correct target audience and that they would be interested in the film itself. There are many more positives than negatives which is a plus side.

Positives -
Good sound effects, works well in time with the narrative of the trailer.
Good camera works - different ones.
Doesn't give away too much of the story line.
Good location.
Good use of different ages people.
Good ending. Leaves you wanting to know more.
Really creepy.

Negatives-
Could be slightly darker- more horror.
Mirror scene bit to subtle.
Not enough horror in there

Ancillary Task - Film Poster

This is what our final film poster looks like:
