What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
Right at the beginning we did a questionnaire to find out what people liked in different trailers. This was just a general questionnaire based on every genre and type they had seen. This helped us decide our genre.
After doing that we made a more specific questionnaire so we can get feedback relating to what we wanted to do. From doing this, the audience feedback we got before we made our trailer or anything such as that, we got a feel for what our target audience wanted, what they enjoyed, what they didn't and what they wanted from a horror trailer, inspired us and gave us ideas to what we could create. By having this information it made it easier for us to create what our target audience wanted.
Once we started creating our trailer we showed our teachers just to get their feedback and how we could improve it. This gave us a couple of ideas on how to improve, and make it what the audience wanted.
Then we showed of our friends ( as they are the same as our target audience.) It was mainly all positive but they gave a couple of ideas such as the transactions which join the clips together.
Once we had finished our trailer we showed our target audience and their feedback I have posted, in a different post. It was mainly all positive and gave us a boost that we had made a good trailer, that was effective.
It seemed to be people of the age 16-20 that mainly enjoyed our trailer. This was a positive sign because this was the people that we were aiming to target our trailer at. It shows I have managed to reach my targeted audience.
Audience theory -
The theories that helped us decide what our target audience should be like and who they are:
British social grading scale -
We classified our target audience via the British Social Grading Scale. It helped to show which groups made the most money.
By targeting teenagers and young adults. This was the group which statistically has most disposable income. Most have jobs, paying low wages but still making them make money. At this age they have little rent to pay (if any) and they can spend their money on what they want to, instead of saving it up. Because of this, this means that they can spend their money on either going to the cinema or buying the DVD.
Lifestyle schematics-
The type of people who we are aiming are trailer at the stereotypical teenager. No stereotypes with teenagers because most like horror films. The reason for teenagers and young adults are they are the people who have the most disposable income and are more likely to be the people who go to cinema or are willing to buy the DVD.
Uses and Gratifications -
Within our trailer we have a bazaar realism and juxtaposition, how the mother has two role - she is a house wide and how this is linked to a horror film. The audience are lulled into a false sense of security and feel they can relate back to it with the family situation. The audience will be getting a horror film with a twist because it starts off as a normal film with a happy family - there is no sign of horror in the beginning section.
With our trailer we have tried to be quite subtle with our horror. The reason for this is so that it can go on TV more, before watershed and in prime time TV. This means we will be able to get a bigger audience as more people will be able to see it. Some people may say there isn't enough horror in it, but our reason for doing so justifies this out.
This isn't a normal convention for horror however I feel it would work.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
For the research and planning side of our production, I used the Internet to find out about other similar products. I used google images and different websites to find out about other magazine front cover and posters for the horror genre. This gave me some ideas for when it came to doing our ancillary tasks. For our main production I youtubed first different genre trailer, however then narrowed it down to the horror genre and youtubed horror trailers to find out what worked, what didn't, what were the forms and conventions and what made the trailer scary. I used the blog to present all of my findings.
I used Microsoft word to create the questionnaire. I did different boxes and lines - which were easiest done on Microsoft word. I also used this to create the table for my progression plan.
To create the graphs for the results of the questionnaire, I used an online website - where all I had to do was input the data found out, then it would create the graphs for me. This was a great help and was easy to use.
For the construction we used two different cameras to film it with, to get different camera angles on the same shot. When it came to doing the lighting in the dark we used a simple but effective way - I have an iPhone and Tyler who was helping us has a htc, we both had torches on there so put them on and moved them about. They worked really well.
Once we had all of our shots we had to put them together. For this we used elements. This was easy to use and had great effects which we could use. We mainly used the fades, to fade clips in and out. This also helped when it came to adding the audio and sound effects. The audio was separate. So we got rid of all of the background noise and the background speech we had, and added in the audio separately. When it came to doing the sound effects, we got them off of Youtube and added them in the same way - using the audio lines.
When it came to doing the ancillary tasks, we used Photoshop to create both of them. It was simple to do as you have the layer tool, which meant you did have to do it all in the correct order.
As we did all of this we used the blog to help us, and posted our work on here for people and teachers to see.
For the evaluation, it was mainly just the blog I used. I posted my work on here as I did it and also I could look at peoples work from last year and what they did to get ideas to help me answer the questions. Also this shows the dates so I know I have to do about 3 posts a weeks, and if I don't my teacher can see and pull me up on it.

How effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary texts?
How effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary texts?

As a brief description to do with all three projects. The trailer has used different camera shots to keep the audience's attention and focus. The establishing shot is a long shot which within the first couple of seconds, shows the location ad character. The characters and the editing are the actions which mainly drive the narrative through this trailer. The main focus of all three tasks are the woman's character as she turns into a dead person. I have focused on this on all three of our productions as in the trailer, she is the main character, in the magazine she is the person on the front cover and for the poster, it is her legs which are shown to be all muddy. This has kept all three of our tasks uniformed, leading to a pleasing outcome for our audience. The poster was mad dark, eeary and serious to contrast with the brightness of the magazine front cover. All three productions are effective because they give away detail however not too much.
Personally I feel our main production and ancillary texts are effective and link together well. We have tried to combine things in the trailer to the film poster and the film poster to the magazine front cover. We have used the same actor in all three - however in completely different ways. The film poster it isn't clear that it is the same main actor, as it consists of just her feet, however we have composed her to be like this but she is in the same outfit as the trailer, so that the audience recognise that its is the same actress. For our magazine front cover we have used the same actress however in a different outfit. I don't feel we should have done this - I feel we should have kept it the same outfit as in the trailer, but Shannon wanted it to be different to look more casual so we went with that idea. You can still tell that it is the same actress though and links into the trailer because of her, it just would have linked in more because of the outfit as well.
We have kept the film poster and the trailer quite dark to link in with the genre of our texts (horror.) This is also the same for the red writing on the poster. This is not the same for the magazine front cover where it is light and white. If it was to link in it would need to be darker and not have such a white background - which doesn't look great because it draws attention to all of the space left on the front cover. There is some dark places, such as the puffs however that is it. The is a small link done by having white writing on the front of the magazine front cover and having the title and the release date in white on the poster.
Continuing with the theme of colours, there is also some red ( a small amount of blood on the bat), on the film poster, whereas the magazine front cover is mainly red.
On all three texts we have mentioned the name of the main actress (Shannon Carey.) This is a subtle link but if they remember the name on one thing it will help with the other two and emphasis it.

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

This image has been taken from the very beginning of my Trailer, as I have found there generally is always a certification alert whether it be from the British Board of Film Classification or one of the coloured banners, as it signifies the target audience of the film. – In my case I have chosen to use one of the coloured banners. Audio is just as important as visual, and I had found that non-diegetic music tended to kick in before anything was heard diegetically to anchor the genre of the film, I chose to do just this, by introducing the first piece of soundtrack for my trailer straight away, in order to set atmosphere and set the pace of the trailer. Voice overs are also commonly used, however only for a short amount of time to introduce a character. Stereotypically a deep male voice is used to create a sense of tension in the air and atmosphere.
Because thriller trailers use quick paced editing along with various camera angles to keep the viewers of the clip enticed, I too decided this would be something I needed to involve within my trailer as it added fluidity and pieced the trailer together.
With our media products we have tried to follow some forms and conventions however we have also challenged some because they didn't work for what we wanted.
Our trailer follows forms and conventions by not giving away too much information. We have only given away the vital information to make it make sense. Also we have put the credits at the end, and the green screen at the beginning.
Our magazine does this by having the title at the top with the mast head. We have challenged it because we have put the bar code at the top of the page with the price and the issue number. This is normally down the bottom of the magazine, but it didn't work there so we put it at the top so it doesn't stand out too much.
The film poster we have followed, by having the title at the top with the release date. Also we have followed the forms by having all the credits at the bottom of the poster. There isn't a specific place for the release date however, normally its either the top or the bottom. We took this into consideration and found out it looked a lot better at the top of the poster. Also we could link it into the title, so this is the reason for that.
Teaser trailers are often described as being short with only a couple of clips to tell the narrative. We challenged this convention by using lots of different short sharp clips which more on quickly. We didnt want to give to much a way and also for horror this adds a tension to the trailer. However we did keep the length short (1:26) to keep the adience entices and interested. Also by keeping it short it makes them want to see more. We put just enough information in this trailer without giving away everything or too much and giving away the whole story line.
We also challenged forms and conventions because normally the protagonist character is a male and the antagonist is a female. In our trailer we have done it so that both characters are bad in a way becuase the male kills the woman * by accident* and the woman tries to get revenge, so we have done it the other way round slightly.
Within our trailer we have created a juxtaposition with the idea of having a house wife and a happy family in a horror film. However we kept the convention of having violence in horror films and making it spooky with our mirror scene when the mother just appears in the mirror even though you cant see her in shot.

Shown to target audience to see what they think
When Shannon and I, finished our trailer we showed it to our target audience, to see what they thought- the positives and the negatives. The feedback we got was mainly all positive, which was a good sign, meaning our trailer does attract the correct target audience and that they would be interested in the film itself. There are many more positives than negatives which is a plus side.
Positives -
Good sound effects, works well in time with the narrative of the trailer.
Good camera works - different ones.
Doesn't give away too much of the story line.
Good location.
Good use of different ages people.
Good ending. Leaves you wanting to know more.
Really creepy.
Negatives-
Could be slightly darker- more horror.
Mirror scene bit to subtle.
Not enough horror in there

Ancillary Task - Drafts - Magazine front cover
The beginning to creating the film magazine. I just wanted to do a complete draft which had no meaning just had all of my ideas down on it. So this is the outcome. It has the title on a slant and in red, the issue number and date next to it, also in red. So draft ideas of what could also be inside the magazine. It has the film reel down the bottom where I want to put some images of backstage filming in. And it has a big white background where I want to main image to go. At the moment between Shannon and I, there is a debate about what should be the main image. Personally I feel it should be a scene of the movie, however Shannon wants to have an images of just the model. The only problem I have with this is, they won't be able to recognise its a horror and what's it's about (the film.)
In this one I have tried to add in the picture down the bottom. I feel they have come out really well, and work, giving the magazine a professional film look.
This is the third draft of our magazine front cover. We have changed the title to something more suitable and the way it is situated on the page, because this looks more professional. We have changed the font to something more "scary". Also have also changed the colour of the issue number and date. This is because we don't want this to be our main focus, so it needs to blend into the background slightly. This is all done on photo shop, so it will be easy to add the background image in last, just change the layers. As well on this draft, we have added in a bar code, to make it professional and a price, which we will probably change, as is quite expensive and quite bold.
This is the fourth draft of our front cover and we have changed the font again. The last one didn't give off the right impression ( the one we were hoping for) and this one works a lot better. We have also changed the title to make it bolder, however I don't know if it is too big know. It like how the different letters are different sizes, however I think over all it is too big. We have also changed the placing of the issue number, however it should go down by the bar code and be smaller font, so we will change that.
We have moved the bar code and the price to the top of the magazine, to make it more discrete. We have also tried the font in red to see what it would look like. I prefer the bar code up the top however I am not sure about the font in red, we shall see what becomes of it. It complements the red, however we will need to add in the background image to see if it stands out enough. We have also moved the date and issue number to under the title. It works however it is quite bold there, which isn't a positive nor is it a negative.
Here we have added in the background image and added in a black puff with red writing. The background image looks really good, however personally it looks very 2D and not professional. The puff doesn't work because it is completely the wrong shape.
We tried different shapes for the puffs, some being;
None of these are the correct shape we were looking for. The one underneath was perfect. We created it by the shapes on photo shop.
Here we have added in the puff, it looks really good because it compliments all the colours used, white red black. I also like how it is slightly covering the title. Makes the front cover look more 3D. In this draft ignore the text we moved it into one to try and sort everything out. I don't like the text being red. Also in this draft we have added in the strip on the side (there is no text on it yet, that will come in later drafts). Personally I feel it needs to be a bit thicker to include the text.
There is a slight change between these two drafts. The size of the coloured boxes. We have moved them back slightly to be a tight fit with the lettering. This makes it look a lot neater and professional. This is the only change from this draft even though it is a minor one is has changed a lot about the look.
As you can see here we have changed the colour of the side column. We have also made it thicker so it is easier to put the text in it. By changing the colour of the side bar to the yellow we changed the colour of the yellow box to match the other two and made it that grey colour of the 5th picture in.
Here we have added in another puff down the bottom. This is to attract the reader more and to advertise another aspect of our magazine on the front cover. We have done it in a circle because we want the other puff to be the main focus. This is our final draft for our magazine.
Ancillary Task - Drafts - Film Poster
This is the first draft that we started off with. It was just to put down our ideas and what we wanted to go on our poster. This is so plain just all the information we needed. We will progress and create more of it.
This is the third draft. We have moved the staring part to the bottom and put it in faint text. This is a form and convention of film poster so I thought we should follow it to make it work. We have kept everything else at the top.
Next we added in the image and finished of the section of writing down the bottom. From creating this we can see the red colour doesn't work, especially down the bottom where it blend to much into the ground. The title and the release date works well.
We have changed all the font colour. The bottom section we have changed to black and opacity to 44% because we really don't want it to stand out, however by looking at this it is too faint. Also we have out all the names in capitals to make them stand out more. We changed the title to white because it complements the poster and stands out. This works better with the poster as a whole.
Here we have done a slight change and it's not that noticeable however, it looks really good. We have moved the release date so the bottom part of the 'g' connects with the '0' of 2012. It blends both of them together and makes them look whole.
Here we have tried to add the blood splatters to the bat. We copied them from the last image, like we mentioned before and changed the opacity to 66% so it doesn't look so bold. I think the bottom part works well, however the second section is too high up the bat and too big.
We changed the opacity of the blood on the bat so it stands out more and tried to make it look 3D with shading and putting white and dark around the outside of it. Once again the bottom section works however the top part doesn't, and there is too much what on it.
Here we have gone with my decision to get rid of the top splatter of blood and just keep the bottom one. Personally I feel this look more effective and works a lot better! This is still not finished because the bottom section is still too faint however it is getting there and is nearly done. With a few changed and tweaks it will be complete. I am proud of this as it works really well and sums up our trailer.
The Images for Ancillary Task
Both of these images are in the raw version. As we create the poser and magazine front cover, we will air brush them and make them look more 'perfect'.
Poster image:

These are the two images which we hope to use for our poster. The red one is of "blood splatters". What we aim to do with this is, use the magnetic lasso tool in photo shop, to copy some of the splodges onto the bat, as it is was the thing she was killed with. We have used the same skirt and bat that we used in the trailer, to relate it back and we have kept it dark because we want our writing to be white and red (the only bright thing of the poster.)
Magazine Image:
This is the raw image, which we are going to go with. When it comes to creating the magazine front cover, we will air brush the face to make it look professional. The reason we have used red is because we have already planned our title to be red, so this would complement it greatly- this is the same for the lipstick and the nail varnish. The reason we have included the bat is to relate it back to our trailer as it is the murder weapon. The actress is the same however she isn't in character here so it looks more casual.

Before -
After -
This is the chosen picture. We have chosen this as the most preferred pose as the actress (me) is herself and not the character starring in the film, the inspiration for including the bat was from the total FILM front cover were the actor is himself but with blood on his face suggesting the violence from a film that he is featured in.
This picture went through a few changes on different editing software.
Lighting - The lighting in the original photo was bad, we wanted to shoot on a flat background so it was easy to edit but that means being inside with less natural light. Due to not being able to afford expensive lighting equipment we tried our best to put light on the face, knowing a lot of brightening would need to be done on Photoshop. We were not completely uncomfortable with this idea, as several magazine front covers are heavily edited.
Body- I have edited the body ever so slightly, bringing in the waist so there is an equal shape on each side. It came out well, as it does not look like I have edited the body at all. I used the bulge and pinch tool on fotoflexer.com.
The pose is sexualised slightly because of were the hand is placed and the plain facial expression. Viewers of magazines are used to seeing this so using this pose will help give the cover a professional look like other top magazines. Red lipstick, dress and nails has purposely been used to show fear, death and violence. It also matches the colouring on the bat and will suit the red title we plan on using

Background - The original photo was taken against a plain background, this background however was not a solid white, so using the Photoshop pen tool and magic wand I removed the background so it was transparent ,meaning when placed on a white background, it looks as if that was how it was originally taken. Editing the hair was difficult, as the magic wand could not do this properly, however I used a tool called Refine Edge, which does a good job at working out where each strand of hair was. There is a small issue with bits being left around the hair but these can be removed by a eraser or can be hidden by well-placed puffs or text.

Red lipstick, dress and nails has purposely been used to show fear, death and violence. It also matches the colouring on the bat and will suit the red title we plan on using
Inspiration for ancillary tasks.
For the magazine front cover, we found this one and want to take it as a great inspiration. It is so simple yet so effective. I like how the head is covering the title. This means it is so well known that they don't need to see the whole thing. I want to do this for ours so it looks like a big magazine. The main image is the one that Shannon wanted to go with, just having a main person, not in character on the front. I can understand where she is coming from, and on this magazine it looks effective, however I am still not 100% sure about it working on our magazine. I will give it a go and see what happens out of it. I like the puff at the top because it attracts the reader's attention. I also love the blue main words, with then the story continuing underneath it. I would want to copy the side bar, however change the side because then the audience see it as they open the magazine. I love the blood effect however if we were to do it i recon we should have the bat in the front cover as it is the murder weapon of the film, so it relates back to our trailer more. I love how the outfit is simple yet compliments the title because of the colours, which also where they are dark bring out the blue and make it stand out More. The price is small and so its not the first thing the audience sees. Although I don't want our bar code in the same position as it wouldn't work with the image we have. This is the inspiration we have taken for our film poster. The idea of having feet walking away, and the murder weapon in the poster ( the bat). I think we should keep the background simple though because we want the main focus to be on the bat and the feet. I like the idea of having the dark colours contrasted with the bright red and the pure white. I like how everything is kept to one side which draws the focus to the image. This is a great inspiration for our poster, what we want to try and create.

My Trailer
This is the link to our nearly finished trailer. There is only one problem with it and that is the number which are on the falling down the stairs scene. We are working on getting rid of these and then our trailer will be complete. Just an update from last post.

Final Script.
There has been lots of changes to the script after several discussions. We decied that the first draft of the script included lots of things that were not nessiserly needed in the trailer. We wanted to change it so that the footage in the trailer would be the most important and would show the story without giving too much away.
This is the final script:

Narrative theory.
What does narrative mean and the different types there are?
The narrative story refers to all the events, which go on through our trailer. So the death of the woman and the mysterious phone call right at the beginning.
The narrative plot, refers to everything audible or visual. So the sound effects and the music we add into the trailer, and how it helps move the trailer along. This also includes the story line, how it moves on through times, leading the audience on a journey.
The voice of the narrative can very. Whose story is it being told from. Who's perspective? So this relating to our trailer, it is done through the perspective of the dead woman as she is the main character. There would be aspects done through the perspective of the father, however not many, because if you change it too often the film becomes confusing.
The way that stories are told - how meaning is constructed to construct audience understanding. This is relative to our trailer because we are going it through the eyes on an on looker and the eyes of the dead mother. By changing this the audiences get to see two different views and it makes it easier for the audience to follow.
Group events that's cause and effect the audience. So the main one in our trailer is the mother dying. This has a massive impact on the film as the audience cant see it coming.
The narrative constructed though camerawork. lighting and mise-en-scene. We have used this in our trailer by using many different camera shots, the lighting we have used bright light and low lights and the mise-en-scene, is everywhere, we have carefully planned to the minor detail what we wanted in each frame. This is the problem we have in our first draft, there is one section where the props on the table near the light change when they aren't mean to. We need to re-do this scene.
Levi Strauss
Levi- Strauss looked at narrative structure in terms of binary oppositions. Binary opposition is when, take the media text film for instance, on the screen are opposite values. An example of this would be to have, the rolling green hills in the background, however in the foreground either a person from the city or something which resembles the city. We understand the concept of the rural landscape to be a complete contrast to the city life and landscape.
Levi-Strauss did not look at the plot or the order in which events happened.

Todorov's Theory.
Is based on the structure of narratives. He started off films with an equilibrium ( a calm period.) Then a disruption (disequilibrium) a period of disettlement. Following with a state of peace and harmony for the protagonists and a new calm state bring the chaos to an end. The simplest form of narrative (sometimes referred to as ‘Classic’ or ‘Hollywood’ narrative).

Vladimir Propp’s theory was formed in the early twentieth Century. He discovered there was different characters within most films. These are: the hero, the villain, the donor, the dispatcher, the false hero, the helper, the princess and her father. There are only 8 different character types and only 31 things they ever do.This is easily related back to films and programmes today.
Internet productions.
In this modern time of the media, there are now companies which show films online or on other electronic items such as xbox's and ps3's.
If our film was going to be made into an actual film then I would want it to reach these companies as well because it means there would be a higher mass audience who would be able to reach it. Also it means it would be able to reach a global market.
The companies which do this on line film promotion (legally) are;
Love Film,
Netflix
Picture Box.
All of these charge a small fee of about £5, but it means their audiences watch the films legally and in good quality, unlike the illegal copies which are online.

Showed our teachers, the first draft of trailer.
Shannon and I showed our teachers, the first draft of trailer to try and get feedback on what they thought and how we could improve it.
The main point both of them gave us was the editing needed to be sharper, however already new this. On the whole it was a positive feedback which boosted our confidence and made us want to make it better.

Backstage whilst filming.
As we were filming we did a bit of backstage work, to try and make it into a blooper reel.
We have put all the different clips together and it is quite comical.
This is the Youtube link to the blooper reel.

Frist draft of trailer.
This is the first draft of our trailer.
There is still a lot more that needs to be done, however this is so you can see how it is coming along.
We still need to edit all the text a little aspects like the title, and we need to get feedback from our audience.
This things which need to be changed are;
- The title and opening title introducing the trailer
-The end clip
-Objects on bedside table need to match
-Touch ups on stair scene
-Touch ups on end hitting scene
This is the Youtube link to it.

Film Companies - Hammer films.
Hammer Films -
http://www.hammerfilms.com/

Hammer films is one of the biggest horror film companies. They have produced films such as The woman in black, which is about to be released in a couple of months, and also let me in, which came out in cinemas in 2010.
Hammer Films was launched in 1934. The first film they produced was The Public Life of Henry The Ninth. After they produced this there was a section of inactivity where nothing happened because world war two was going on, so there was no need for films. Even to this day Hammer Films are still going and creating more films. They are doing more and more films, which means the TV series, Books and sound tracks side of the company is dissolving. This is a major problem because they main income comes from films and the more they do the bigger they are becoming. Last year in 2011 they produced 13 films, and we are still in the first month of 2012 and they are already bringing out a film, including big names such as Daniel Radcliffe.
They do special screens of their films and create them into special events to create more income for the company - meaning more profit.

Flat plans for Ancillary Task.
These will more than likely change when it comes to creating the actual thing, however here is the first draft of both ancillary tasks - the flat plans.
Flat Plans for front cover of a music magazine, which the main feature is my trailer.
Flat Plans for the film poster for our trailer.
Research for Ancillary Tasks - Front cover of a magazine.
I don't like this poster, however the aspect which I do like, and think is inventive, is the picture reel down the bottom. This front cover is too plain and doesn't give much /enough information about the magazine away. Having the models head over the title, doesn't work because you can't read what it says. By giving the first and last letter, isn't enough. There are good ideas here, such as the dark colours and using contrasting colours such as the black red and white, however where this person has placed the text, isn't in the correct place. I don't know what the main focus of this front cover is because my attention (as an on looker and audience) and drawn to the title instead of the main image. This person hasn't followed many conventions when it comes to magazine front covers because the bar code isn't at the bottom with the price - the bar code is half war down the magazine and the price is at the top. When creating a magazine I personally feel you should try to hide the price unless it is a special offer and very cheap. The it should be put in a puff and made bold.
This magazine is a lot better, in terms of the text on it. There is a lot more, explaining what is in the magazine, the colours clashing, meaning they stand out more. This also follow a lot more forms and conventions - They have a big puff selling something major. They haven't covered up the title. The main image is the main focus, which is enhanced by not using any more images of the whole cover. The text is emphasised because they have used the same colour as in the picture which the blood. The bar code is at the bottom and the price is hidden.
I am hoping to take aspects from both of these front covers. The top one I would like to replicated the reel of images down the bottom of it, as I personally feel it is quirky, and the bottom one uses most of the forms and conventions which I will be using in mine.
